There is a longstanding legacy behind the iconic Route 66 sign at the Santa Monica Pier.
Route 66 is famous for being one of the very first highways that connected the west coast of the US to the east and was established on November 11, 1926.
A mere 2,448 mile stretch between Santa Monica and Chicago, Illinois, Route 66 fostered travelers, adventurers and entrepreneurs alike, and soon became a substantial tributary for civil and economic growth along its route.
A song was even written about it by the incredible Nat King Cole, and highlights just some of the more infamous cities along its route! Enjoy it on YouTube here.
Today, April 30, marks the kickoff of the Route 66 Centennial celebration in Springfield, MO. You can find information on events and festivities on the Route 66 Centennial website.
And, of course, Santa Monica will hold its very own centennial celebration on the official Centennial date, this November 11, 2026. Visit www.santamonica.com/route66/ for event details and information… it’s sure to be a historic event!
