Malibu’s PCH Speed Camera Program
Malibu’s New PCH Speed Cameras: What Every Driver Needs to Know
Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) through Malibu has long been celebrated for its breathtaking coastal views—and notorious for dangerous high-speed collisions. To curb reckless driving and protect residents, pedestrians, and visitors, the City of Malibu is rolling out its automated Speed Safety System along PCH.
Authorized under California Assembly Bill 645 (AB 645)—a pilot program permitting automated speed enforcement in select California cities—these automated safety cameras monitor traffic continuously and capture violations when vehicles exceed posted speed limits by critical thresholds.
Key Camera Locations Along PCH
The camera locations target high-risk, heavily trafficked zones along Malibu’s 21-mile stretch of PCH, focusing on areas with high pedestrian activity, beach access points, school zones, and commercial districts:
Tuna Canyon & PCH
Carbon Beach Terrace & PCH
Latigo Canyon & PCH
Morning View Drive & PCH
Decker Road & PCH
Project Timeline, Public Education & Warning Period
To ensure transparency and give motorists time to adjust, the program begins with an initial public education and warning period. During this phase:
- Prominent warning signage is installed ahead of each enforcement zone.
- Drivers caught speeding by the cameras will receive warning notices in the mail rather than monetary fines during the introductory period.
- Following the warning period, civil fine citations will automatically be issued to vehicle owners exceeding speed limits.
Program Timeline
Initial Public Information and Education Phase – August 18, 2026 to September 31, 2026.
Warning Period – Beginning in Late September 2026.
Enforcement Phase – Beginning in Late November 2026.
Why Automated Enforcement?
PCH has seen a tragic number of preventable speed-related crashes and fatalities in recent years. Automated enforcement serves as an essential tool alongside roadway re-engineering, improved road markings, and traditional law enforcement patrols to foster long-term behavioral changes among drivers.
